Pet yabbies

Where should I keep them?
In a fish tank with a lid, an aerator and a rock or piece of pipe for them to use as shelter.

How long do they live?
3 to 4 years.

What should I feed them?
Small amounts of vegetable scraps, chicken pellets, and a little lean meat now and then. Remove what isn't eaten so the leftovers don't pollute the water.

How often do I feed them?
Every day in summer and very little in winter. Yabbies hybernate in winter like bears, so as the weather gets colder you'll notice your yabby isn't eating as much.

As the weather warms in spring you'll see your yabby becoming more active and eating more.

If I buy a male and a female will they breed in my tank?
Yes. The female holds the eggs under her tail until they hatch.

Can I put my yabby in with my fish?
No! Yabbies will eat the fish and the fish could eat the juvenile yabbies.
