Maybe
you're fishing for the sport and don't want to keep your catch.
Put those fish back too.
Here's
my tips for letting fish go - and helping them survive.
- Use
hooks without barbs.
- Don't
use a net with knots to pick the fish up. Knots can damage
the fish's skin and eyes
- Bring
the fish in quickly - a long fight stresses a fish and it's
more likely to die.
- Cut
the line rather than remove a hook from the gut or gills
- Try
not to lift the fish from the water. If you do, wet your
hands first so you don't damage the protective slime and
scales on the fish.
- If
you have to put the fish down to take the hook out, put
it on a smooth, wet surface and avoid injuring the fish.
- Remove
the hook carefully or if the fish has swallowed the hook,
cut the line as close as possible to the fish's mouth.
- Return
the fish to the water as quickly as possible.
- Before
releasing the fish you might have to help revive it. Hold
the fish horizontally under its body and gently move it
backwards and forwards in the water. This lets the water
pass through its gills. It will swim off by itself when
it's ready.
