Follow the fishing rules
These tell you how many fish you can catch, which fish you can't catch, the size we should be when you keep us and the type of gear you can use. You'll find some of these in Learn to fish Ask an adult to help you understand the rules.

Return small, protected and unwanted fish to the water. See our tips for putting fish back safely in Catch it and let it go.

Report problems on causeways
If you see a waterfall of more than 10 cm from a causeway (where the road crosses a waterway), it could mean fish can't get through. Tell your local Fisheries Office.

Clean up after your dog
This will stop the waste ending up in our home.

Ask adults to help
They can:

• wash the car on the lawn to stop soap running into the gutter;
  
• use natural cleaners and avoid toilet blues and dyed toilet paper;
  
• sweep paths and gutters rather than hose the rubbish into the stormwater system;
  
• contact NSW DPI for help to remove an unwanted weir or other structure on their property that might stop fish getting through;
• report rare or protected fish by calling 02 4916 3877.
• report pest fish and plants by calling 02 4916 3811.

Don't leave your tackle and rubbish behind
This could end up in the water and harm or kill a fish. When you've finished fishing for the day, take everything with you and leave the area as you found it. When you get home safely dispose of rubbish that can't be recycled like bait bags, hooks and line.

Don't flush aquarium fish and plants down the toilet
Many of these, such as gold fish, are pests in NSW waters and can cause harm to native creatures and plants.

Don't damage aquatic plants
These provide shelter and food for fish and other creatures.

Don't wash scraps down the sink
Tea leaves, vegetable peel, food scraps, milk, cooking oil and fat that is washed down the drain pollute the waterways and harm fish.
